Amsterdam Merit Scholarship 2024 Requirements:

To get an AMS scholarship, you need to:

  1. Have a passport from outside the EU/EEA and can’t get financial support from the Dutch study grants and loans system (Studiefinanciering). If your nationality or residence permit changes, or if you start receiving support from Studiefinanciering, inform the scholarship office promptly during the academic year.
  2. Apply for a Master’s program at UvA for the first time. You won’t get the AMS if you’re already doing a second Master’s degree at UvA.
  3. Follow the Dutch visa rules given by the Dutch Immigration Service (IND).
  4. Register as a full-time student at UvA for the academic year and the program for which you’re getting the scholarship. This scholarship is only for specific programs:
    • International and European Law
    • European Private Law
    • Law & Finance
    • International Criminal Law

Remember, you don’t need your admission decision by the AMS deadline, but you’ll only get the scholarship if you’re (conditionally) accepted and complete your enrollment by September 1.

Selection criteria:

Candidates who are eligible for the scholarship will be chosen based on their academic performance. The minimum GPA required is:

  • 3.7 (USA)
  • First-class honours/upper division (British system)
  • Cum laude (Dutch system) or 8+ (Dutch EC-system, 10-point scale)

If you have a non-legal bachelor’s degree that grants admission to the LLM program, only the law courses will be considered in calculating your GPA.

In addition to academic merit, the selection criteria include:

  1. Letter of Motivation: Write a letter (maximum 500 words) explaining why you chose the specific Master’s program and why obtaining this scholarship is important.
  2. Academic Research Talent: Demonstrate your academic research capabilities through two letters of recommendation from a teacher or academic (thesis) supervisor.
  3. CV (Curriculum Vitae): Provide your CV detailing your educational and professional background.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship 2024 Application Process:

To apply for the scholarship, follow these steps:

  1. LLM Application Submission:
    • Complete your LLM application before January 1.
  2. Scholarship Application Submission:
    • Submit the scholarship application form before January 15, 2024.
  3. Required Documents:
    • In your scholarship application form, upload the following documents:
      • Certified transcripts of academic records (including diploma if already completed), showcasing your GPA as per the selection criteria.
      • Two letters of recommendation from a dean, teacher, or academic supervisor.
      • CV detailing your educational and professional background.
      • Letter of motivation (maximum 500 words) explaining why you chose the specific Master’s program, its broader context, relevance for your future career, and the significance of receiving the scholarship.
      • Proof of English proficiency (as uploaded in your LLM application).
  4. Completeness Matters:
    • Ensure that your scholarship application is complete, as incomplete applications will not be considered.
  5. Dual Scholarship Application:
    • If you want to apply for both the AMS and Jaarsma scholarships, indicate your preference in the scholarship application form.
  6. Notification of Decision:
    • The Selection Committee of the Amsterdam Law School will inform you about their decision by the end of May.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship 2024 Deadline:

If you would like to be considered for a scholarship, you will need to have submitted your complete LLM application (including all required documents) before 1 January. The deadline for submitting the intake form for the scholarship and all scholarship-related documents is 15 January.
